What is misophonia?

Misophonia is a neurological condition where everyday sounds like chewing, sniffing, or tapping trigger intense emotional reactions like rage, panic, or disgust. Brain imaging studies show that people with misophonia process these sounds differently, with heightened activity in the part of the brain that regulates emotion and threat. So no, you’re not crazy, and you’re not alone.

People with Misophonia often don’t even realize they have a condition, let alone have the words to explain it. This leads to feeling misunderstood, isolated, and ashamed. On top of the emotional distress of being constantly triggered by everyday sounds, they often avoid socializing and participating in emotionally nurturing everyday activities most people take for granted.

Our vision is to end misophonia

Ambitious, right? But misophonia is still a recently studied condition, and there’s so much science has yet to uncover. What if a permanent treatment is just one study away? That kind of breakthrough starts with us, and that's why we created Misophonia NYC. A safe, informative, and entertaining space where people with misophonia feel seen, supported, and connected. As we grow, our goal is to provide:

  • Icon representing understanding.

A better understanding of misophonia and the words to confidently articulate it to others

  • Icon representing tools and techniques.

Tools and techniques to cope with triggers and regulate emotional responses

  • Icon representing community.

A supportive community that gets it, where you connect, learn and enjoy peaceful meals together
